Rowan Base
The Rowan Base (Years 7-11) caters for pupils with more complex learning needs and/or those pupils who need a more sheltered nurturing environment. It has smaller classes of usually no more than eight pupils and a higher adult to pupil ratio to develop confidence, independence and to provide extra support to enable pupils to achieve.
In Key Stage 3 (Years 7-9) pupils are taught a modified mainstream curriculum, some of which is taught in the base by specialist teachers and some in small groups by subject specialist teachers with additional adult support. Rowan pupils also have opportunities to join their peers from Oak base in some subjects.
In Key Stage 4 (Years 10-11)Rowan pupils work alongside Beechbase pupils on appropriate accredited Key Stage 4 qualifications (including Entry Level, functional skills, BTEC, Asdan) supported by Rowan staff, whilst still returning to the nurturing base for form and study time. A flexible approach is taken so that pupils reach their potential and can access GCSE or other qualifications where appropriate.
Pupils in Rowan Base receive a higher level of support from our specialists, including a social interaction group and some in class support from a Speech and Language Therapist. In addition, Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy are available as well as weekly individual specialist teaching for Maths and English if appropriate. Some Rowan pupils are also supported through weekly sessions with one of our Social and Emotional Development team.
