Life at ERS

Egerton Rothesay is a co-educational, non-selective, school in Berkhamsted for pupils aged 6-19. It has spacious grounds and modern buildings across the campus – including recent new buildings for older pupils and designated areas for the junior school, specialist support and specialist teaching.

We welcome childrenwith a range of abilities and from all faiths or none. We offer a broad curriculum with specialist support and small classes to cater forpupils with additional needs and who may find a larger school environment overwhelming.

Our pupils are funded either by their parents or by one of a number of local authorities who pay for, or contribute to, the cost of pupils attending ERS. Our catchment area extends over a 35-mile radius with many parents using our bus service for their child.

ERS pupils access a broadly mainstream curriculum appropriate to their needs, all supported by a programme of specialist provision, with specialist and classroom staff working together to support their learning needs and development. This means we can help children with a range of special educational needs to achieve their maximum educational potential.

ERS is  a calm, safe, and supportive environment for pupils who have a  range of additional needs. These include Speech, Language and Communication needs, Autism Spectrum Conditions, Attention Deficit Disorders , Specific Learning Difficulties and social and emotional needs.

Many of our pupils have more than one area of need or diagnosis, but we see each child as an individual and focus on learning about their own unique mix of strengths, interests and challenges. Our goal is to support every pupil in a way that works for them—helping them build confidence, grow in independence, and make the best possible progress.

ERS pupils are taught in small classes by a team of dedicated staff who work hard to get to know them and to understand their strengths and needs. Our staff are experienced in working with pupils with a range of needs and receive regular training from our in-house specialists and visiting professionals. We also have a growing number of staff members with post graduate qualifications in different areas of SEN including Autism and Specific Learning Difficulties such as Dyslexia and Dyscalculia.

Pupils at ERS also receive specialist provision appropriate to their needs, either individually or in small groups. Our in-house specialist team at ERS is made up of specialist teachers for Literacy and Numeracy, Speech and Language therapists, Occupational therapists and the Social and Emotional Development team. We also have a regular visiting physiotherapist who works with a small number of children and trains staff to implement physiotherapy programmes for them. Specialist staff also work with curriculum teachers and learning support staff to ensure that strategies are in place to support each pupil’s learning and well-being. This means that specific programmes can be practised and reinforced in the classroom.

Bases

In order to facilitate a supportive educational environment and closely monitor academic and pastoral achievement, the school is divided into bases grouped by curriculum stage.

Each base has its own defined area within the school and is led by a Learning Base Leader, who is also a member of the Senior Management Team. The Learning Base Leader takes responsibility for the day to day running of the base and each pupil’s academic and pastoral progress.
