Poplar News - 8th May 2026
Yesterday, Poplar pupils visited the STEM Discovery Centre in Stevenage to support their Science learning through a range of exciting hands-on activities and practical experiences. During the visit, the children attended a fascinating presentation about the ExoMars Project, which included viewing the Mars Yard Test Area. This gave pupils an engaging insight into real-world space exploration, robotics and engineering. The children also took part in an interactive science show called Could it be Magic?, where they explored a variety of science-based tricks and phenomena, including pushing a skewer through a balloon without it bursting. These demonstrations helped pupils understand scientific principles in a fun, memorable and engaging way.
In class this week, PSS began their Mayans topic by investigating where and when the remains of the Mayan civilisation were discovered. To build on their learning, they developed a role-play about Spanish conquistadors encountering the Mayan ruins. Their performances were full of passion and very impressive! RN have officially begun their new Topic unit looking at The Roman Empire. They have been very lucky that Miss Hose went to Rome over the Easter holiday and has taken lots of pictures so that the children can compare modern day Rome to how it was in 27BC. PIH have been looking at the work of Leonid Afremov, trying out some of his vibrant acrylic styles, using home-made palette knives. The PIH Literacy group is thoroughly enjoying their new reading book ‘Holes’. They have been learning about the ‘inmates’ of Camp Green Lake and trying to work out how the flashbacks link to the story line.
