School Structure Below Year 7

Children up to the age of 11 are educated either in Springboard or the Rainbow Centre. The Rainbow Centre is for children whose primary need is due to a speech and language and/or communication need (SLCN). Springboard is for children who have individual needs which are not primarily speech and language.

Springboard

  • This is for children aged 5–11 who are too young for the core ERS structure but who would particularly benefit from early assistance. Teaching within Springboard can address individual needs such as dyslexia or dyspraxia. Teaching is very individual and is focused on the child.
  • The children in Springboard are of varying abilities all of whom can benefit from our caring ethos and small classes, where they get the attention and support they need to help with their difficulties. Children flourish when they regain their confidence, and they begin to enjoy learning – often for the first time.

Rainbow (Speech and Language Centre)

  • This consists of three classes for children aged 5–11 who due to speech, language and/or communication disorders (SLCD) are unable to benefit from full-time placement in mainstream classes.
  • Each Rainbow class is staffed by an experienced teacher and an experienced Learning Support Assistant (LSA). The Specialist Speech and Language Therapist, who is also a qualified teacher, divides her time between the two classes. Rainbow staff can also draw on the expertise of the senior school’s specialist staff.
